I definitely think Gambardella and Russell have it in them to play 4th line minutes in the NHL and do so effectively. While they may not be the best possible 4th line, they've shown enough for me to bring them back and supplement a 4C with some speed (K Russell for Helm). In conjunction with a Copp trade, we could have the makings of a bottom-6 that won't get completely caved in.

Khaira- Copp- Gagner
Gambo- Helm- Russell
Cave, Rattie

I think Gagner's existence on the roster makes the retention of Chiasson unlikely. This isn't to say Chiasson has no value; just that the cap hit of Gagner takes up any wiggle room I'd allow in negotiations with Chiasson.

Pretty (frank)ing sad that the Oil are handicapped by dead and avoidable cap hits to Gagner, Manning, B. Pouliot, Eric Gryba and Brodziak that prevent them from re-signing Chiasson who was a cost effective bright spot in a disappointing season.

Not to mention the obvious Lucic and Russell garbage.

While I think it's wrong to pencil them into the lineup by default, a 20 year old, AHL rookie season that features point per game numbers and dominant zone control from a player known for being a complete player is something to have optimism about. I'd be inclined to give him the treatment most similar players get; start the season in the AHL for at least ~10 games and force your way up. Have a dominant start to the season and carry that momentum into the NHL where maybe that can translate into some early points.

Agreed, it is sad. It's not Chiasson that makes me lament that, though. It's all the myraid other players that we could've been in on, but instead have to suffer mediocrity.

Yeah Chiasson is just the easiest example because he could be signed now.

And I totally agree with you about not expecting/planning for Benson to be a regular but if I had to bet I would guess he will play more NHL than AHL games next year.

This team is a mess on and off the ice and need to make drastic changes if they want to be a serious contender for the cup in 3/4 years. Keep Pully and Gambardella and turf the rest. This team also has to look at their roster players and see which ones are worth keeping and replacing the others with players from winning organizations. However not many of their roster players are worth keeping.

You forgot to discuss who stays and who goes from the team in an off ice capacity. I say fire anyone that is in the office and has been on the payroll for more than 1 year. Top to bottom. Bobby Nic to Joey and everyone in between. Especially any media that is paid anything from the Oilers.

I don't mind it if it's properly managed. Either you're paying for the guy's buy out, you're paying for some cap retention or you're paying the full amount. I absolutely support the retention/buyout of a contract if I can be confident that the result of that inaction will be more of the same as what we saw this year. In the case of Lucic, I'm confident that keeping him around will mean more of the same so finding anyway to free up some space and utilize it for a player that at least has a chance of bringing more is completely worth it.

The jets don’t look all that great either and they also have to find room to sign a few big contracts this summer.
